TEXT AND LITERATURE

1) World Literature
2) Vocabulary Workshop Level G
3) Various novels and plays will be assigned throughout the term, possibly including, but not limited to: Siddhartha, A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man, Things Fall Apart, Night, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Dante's Inferno and Cyrano de Bergerac.
4) Numerous poems and short stories will be assigned.

ASSIGNMENTS AND TESTS

1) Writing assignments will include paragraphs, compositions, personal essays, journals, creative writing, informative writing, persuasive writing, writing about literature, research project, letters, applications, resumes and speeches.
2) Language assignments and tests will include parts of speech, sentence patterns, sentence diagramming, phrases, clauses, usage and mechanics.
3) Vocabulary study and quizzes will occur every week. Literary terms and vocabulary from the literature will also be studied and tested.

GRADING POLICY

Grading will occur on a variety of assignments including writing, discussion responses, public speaking, group work, outside reading, tests, quizzes, presentations and participation.

Grading Scale:   90% -100% A
                       80% - 89% B 
                       70% - 79% C
                       60% - 69% D
                       -----  -59% E
 
Grading Policy:  50% Classwork
                       25% Homework
                       25% Tests and quizzes


ACADEMIC POLICIES

Logistics
1) Your English notebook and any novel we are reading must be brought to class every day.
2) Final drafts of writing assignments will be kept under the student's name in a folder in the classroom.
3) All final drafts of writing assignments must be completed in blue or black ink or printed out. No credit can be given otherwise.
 
Late Work
1) All assignments must be turned in on time. Failure of technology is never an excuse for late work. Save all large assignments to at least two external media. Save all assignments in Rich Text Format (.rtf) so the file can be opened on any computer.
2) The student is responsible for all makeup work.
